Are You A Numbers Person When It Comes To Blogging?

Too many new bloggers are spending to much time watching their numbers and stats than they should be, time that should be spent working on content for their blogs.

The numbers are not what is important especially when starting a blog. A lot of time is wasted, keeping daily lists, comparing, collating and sorting all these numbers.

I have to admit I'm guilty.

I was a numbers person, when it comes to blogging and still take a look every now and then, but nothing like when I first started. I've watched my numbers climb rapidly for a few hours, stand still for days, even going backwards, only to rise again, then down, up and down.

Funny, but as I was reading my statistics I realized the days I worried more about the numbers were slow days, not many hits, even losing members. I looked at the content I had for that day, not very good, dull and uninteresting. I was trying to write articles that would stimulate my numbers, not my readers.

Since those beginning days, I've changed. I'm more focused. It doesn't matter how many hits I get. It doesn't matter how many people join my site or follow me. All that matters is, that I have something to say and want to say it. Of course I've come to the conclusion that you can't please everyone, so I don't. I remember the day I received my first negative comment, I now have a list of negative comments. At least when the numbers are moving either way, you know people are reading.

Now, I search out other bloggers stats, they're more interesting than mine. So are other people's profiles, I try to read as many as I can, finding out what they're doing that I'm not, what they're into that I should be.

It's all an endless learning game.

To think, 80% of blogs today will be abandoned by this time next month, the average blog is updated every 2 to 3 times per week. 82% of blogs contain pictures, 85% use tags, 61% make extra money from blogging, and 70% say they love that satisfaction they received from social networking, 41.6% of bloggers think website design is important, 75% of Smartphone users watch video on their phones. The list goes on.

Really, I'm not the numbers man I used to be.

  1. "If you build it, they will come". But make it interesting helps a lot too. :-)
